Gideon

Lately, I’ve been studying the story of Gideon with the women in my Christian Creative Table group. I had the privilege of teaching how God met Gideon right in the middle of his doubts and fears. You can read Gideon's story in Judges 6 & 7. Gideon felt utterly insufficient for the task God had called him to, yet God called him a “mighty warrior.” It’s amazing, because while God saw Gideon’s potential, his family saw him differently. They even gave him the nickname “Jerubbaal,” which means, “Let Baal fight against him,” a retaliation for Gideon tearing down their idol of baal. The idol of a god that the Israelites had been worshipping.
Even in the midst of his fear and uncertainty, God saw Gideon’s true worth. He knew Gideon was the right man for the job and, through His strength, transformed Gideon’s view of himself into that of a valiant hero. Though we know that God gets all the glory in the story, He used Gideon to show us that we, too, can overcome.
What’s powerful is that, in the story of Gideon, God didn't rush to remove his doubts and fears. Instead, He patiently walked alongside him as Gideon wrestled with his uncertainty. This is a key part of the story: God is all about relationship, and relationships aren’t built on pretending. God invites us to come to Him just as we are, bringing our struggles, our fears, and our doubts. He doesn't want us to wear a mask or hide our true selves. In fact, God knows us better than we know ourselves, and yet He still wants us to share every detail with Him.
When you think about it, God didn’t come to Earth to create robots; He came to have a relationship with us as sons and daughters. If He didn’t want that relationship, there would be no point in Jesus coming to die for us. Jesus came to walk with us through the highs and the lows, the doubts and the fears.
So, what doubts and fears are you carrying today? Don’t hold them back—bring them to Jesus. He’s listening, and He’s with you every step of the way. Whatever He’s calling you to do, He won’t leave you alone in the process. He’ll help you work through the doubts and fears. You don’t have to carry them on your own. Trust Him, trust the process, and know that He’s always working for your good.
Don’t stay stuck. Break down the walls and open up to God. He loves you, He’s always with you, and He’s never going to leave you broken. Let Him restore communication with you and bring healing to your heart.
